Graduate Training Schemes During Covid19
What is a Graduate training scheme?
A graduate training scheme is a structured training programme run by an employer to allow an introduction to an organisation’s running and its business in general, whilst providing full training. Training will usually involve the study of general workplace skills such as project management, negotiation and decision making, and communication. Depending on the industry, they may also explore other aspects of business such as strategy, human resources, sales, marketing, and finance.
Training schemes usually last between 1 – 2 years and gives graduates the opportunity to gain hands on experience to develop a broader understanding of a chosen profession as well as receiving support in gaining key skills for the role.
Some schemes will require rotation through different business functions so flexibility and a willingness to learn are essential.
Spaces for these schemes are generally very limited, especially those in major industries, so you will have to ensure your application stands out.
When can I apply and when do they start?
You can start to apply for graduate schemes from the end of your second to last year (June onwards) but always check first and apply as soon as possible. Many schemes close once their applications are full so its best to get in there as soon as you can.
Training schemes tend to start in August/September after graduation.
What affect has COVID 19 had on training schemes?
Due to the current situation many companies have changed their recruitment plans for this year, with some postponing start dates, some freezing applications, and others cancelling recruitment plans altogether. There’s no doubt that this year is difficult for a lot of people but slowly companies are snapping back into action, with many still going ahead.
Most importantly don’t give up! Keep doing what you can to boost your CV, and keep applying for the roles that you want. If you don’t try you won’t get so it’s vital to keep going , even if you feel like everything around you is slowing down.
