A-Level results ended up being in clearing – Please Help
Clearing is how universities fill any places that they still have within courses. From 5th July – 21st October 2024 you can apply for a course using clearing. You can only do this if you’re not already holding an offer from a university and the course has space.
Clearing can only be used if you are applying after the 30th June, didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept), not met the conditions of your offers, you paid the multiple-choice application fee (£27.00) and have declined your firm place using the “decline my place button” in your application.
First things to do in Clearing
The first thing on your agender should be to get advice and talk to an adviser. This can be through school, college or careers centres, you can ask for advice on alternative course/subjects.
You can use the search tool within UCAS Hub to find courses – it’s the only official vacancy list so it’s the most up-to-date.
If you can’t find the course you’re looking for:
Try considering a different subject, check out joint honours course so you get to study a mix of subjects. Keep checking, university’s update their course information regularly. Some vacancies might come along. Check the course details, how is it structured each year? What modules make up each year? What are the entry requirements?
Before adding a university to your clearing
Call them and give them your clearing number (found on your application) and personal ID. This way they can look you up and access your details. You can then ask them if they would accept you – They may reconsider you. You can get informal offers over the phone; ask about accommodation options. Additionally see if you can visit, most universities are willing to show you around or at the very least send you a virtual tour.
Once you have permission
Once you have spoken to the university and been given permission you can then add them to your clearing as a choice.
Click “add clearing choice” and fill in the course details by the date the university gave you on the phone. This counts as you definitely accepting the offer. So, if they confirm, it’ll show as an acceptance of your “choices” page in your application. You can only add one choice at a time, but if the university doesn’t confirm your place, you will be able to add another. If the university confirms your place, you can then find your student accommodation and then start to get everything ready for your studies.
