Careers Fairs & Getting the most from them

Careers fairs give you the chance to speak to a number of employers at the same time. To get the best out of this opportunity you will need to make sure you are prepared.

You should get given a list of companies that are attending the event. Don’t bury this at the bottom of your bag make it work for you. Research each company that is attending and see what they have to offer.

Make a “hit list” of companies you feel you must see on the day. Don’t rule the others out, make sure you go and see them to find out more about them. You may find that they have more to offer than what you have researched.

When attending the event keep in mind that these are potential employers. Dress smart to make sure you are giving them the best first impression. Have copies of your CV and cover letter with you so you can give to them so they have you in the front of their minds.

Make sure you follow up, collect business cards so if you have had a good conversation with an employer, you have their details so you can connect on LinkedIn and thank them for their help and information on the day. If you have said that you will also email a CV/Cover letter ensure you do.

Make notes of any tips and advise you were given throughout the day and put them in to practice.
