Unique famous faces with university degrees
There are so many celebrities that have gone to university that you may be shocked to hear about.
Working hard in many ways and succeeded in their own way. Some not even using their degrees to get them where they are today.
The Famous Emma Watson
Well known for her acting work, she took a gap year before starting university, this was to film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Parts 1 & 2. Joining Brown University in Rhode Island and graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English Literature.
Emma’s journey wasn’t as straight forward as many students’ journey, she took a “semester or two” off after 18 months at the university.
She did attend a college in Oxford during 2011-2012 academic year as part of the visiting student programme.
It took Emma 5 years to graduate instead of 4 years due to her acting work and having to take semesters off. She has appeared in the Harry Potter films, Beauty and the Beast and many more. She has modelled for Teen Vogue partnered with Burberry & Lancôme to name a few.
Emma is an outspoken feminist and has promoted education for girls, traveling to Bangladesh and Zambia to do so. On coping with intense fame from a young age, she has said that remaining rooted in her own identity helped her eventually “find peace”
Jessica Chastain
Studying at Julliard on a scholarship funded by Robin Williams. She is now a leading Hollywood actress and producer.
Jessica was very interested in acting from 7 years old after seeing a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
She struggled academically, considered herself a loner and a misfit. Finding a release through acting in 1998 she finished her education and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. Making her professional stage debut as Juliet in a production of Romeo and Juliet staged by Theatre Works.
The production led her to audition for Julliard School in New York City. She was soon accepted and granted a scholarship. Building her confidence year on year and taking part in more productions. She graduated in 2003 with a Batchelor of Fine Arts degree.
Kourtney Kardashian
Went to the university of Arizona.
Kourtney graduating with a Batchelors degree in Theatre Arts and minor in Spanish.
She became first known to reality tv in 2005 from Filthy Rich: Cattle Drive. Following this in 2007 she starred in the family series “keeping up with the Kardashian’s” as well as launching several fashion collaborations and fragrance lines.
Sacha Baron Cohen
Studied at Christs College Cambridge in 1993. Graduating with an upper second-class honour in History.
After leaving university he worked as a fashion model. Sacha started hosting a weekly programme on Windsor cable television with Carol Kirkwood.
In 1995 channel 4 were looking to replace a program, so Sacha sent a tape in based on a fictional tv broadcaster which caught the producers’ eyes. Leading him to be the host of Pump TV 1995-1996.
In 1998 he shot to fame with his character Bruno, on paramount comedy channel followed by Ali G. From there he shot to fame and has so many tv appearances and films.
Sir David Attenborough
Winning a scholarship to Clare College, Cambridge in 1945 to study geology and zoology. Obtaining a degree in natural sciences.
David was called up for national service in the Royal Navy , spending two years stationed in North Wales and the Firth of Forth. Once leaving the Navy, David took a position editing children’s science textbooks for a publishing company. In 1950 he applied for a job as a radio talk producer with the BBC. David was rejected for this role but his later on his CV attracted the head of talks. He did accept an offer of a three-month training course and joining the BBC fulltime. At first, he didn’t want to be seen on camera as he felt his appearance wouldn’t appeal to the audience.
Fast forward a few years
To 1954, David became the presenter at short notice of the show Zoo Quest. In the early 1960s, David resigned from the permanent staff of the BBC in order to study for a postgraduate degree in social anthropology at the London School of Economics. Interweaving his study with further filming.
David accepted an invitation to return to the BBC as controller of BBC Two before he could finish the degree. In January 2013, David had collected 32 honorary degrees from British universities. More than any other person and in 1985 he was knighted as Sir David Attenborough.
Please remember not to let anything hold you back from the career you want. You may have an English degree but want to be an actress like Emma, still go for it. You may have studied History but feel you could be a great comedian like Sacha.
Each of these celebrities chose their degrees and had a plan for what they wanted to do. They studied hard and then their plan changed once they graduated. They have had ups and downs but they still pushed for what they wanted. So don’t restrict yourself and strive for the stars!
